It's that time of year again.

New backpacks. New shoes. New teachers. New classrooms. And for moms — a whole new set of things to pray about.

Whether your child is starting kindergarten or heading into high school, the beginning of a new school year is one of the most powerful times to cover your kids in prayer. They're stepping into a world that will challenge their faith, test their character, and shape who they're becoming.

Your prayers matter. Here's how to pray them.

Lord, I ask for Your protection over [child's name] this school year. Protect them physically — keep them safe from harm, from accidents, from illness. Protect them emotionally — guard their heart from cruelty, from rejection, from the wounds that can come from other kids. Protect them spiritually — keep them from influences that would pull them away from You. Surround them with Your presence every moment of every school day. Amen.

Scripture to stand on: "The Lord will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." — Psalm 121:7-8

God, help [child's name] know who they are in You. When the world tells them they're not enough — not smart enough, not cool enough, not talented enough — remind them that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. Give them a confidence that doesn't come from other people's approval but from knowing they are deeply loved by You. Amen.

Scripture to stand on: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." — Psalm 139:13-14

Lord, give [child's name] a love of learning this year. Open their mind to understand what they're being taught. Give them wisdom beyond their years. Help them to work hard, to persevere when things are difficult, and to ask for help when they need it. Let their education be a gift they receive with gratitude. Amen.

Scripture to stand on: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." — James 1:5

Father, surround [child's name] with good friends this year — friends who are kind, who are honest, who will encourage them to be their best. Give them the discernment to choose friendships wisely. And help them to be the kind of friend who brings out the best in others. Protect them from friendships that would lead them away from You or away from who You've made them to be. Amen.

Scripture to stand on: "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." — Proverbs 13:20

God, I pray for [child's name]'s teachers this year. Give them patience, wisdom, and a genuine love for the children in their care. Help my child to respect and honor their teachers, even when it's hard. And use those teachers — knowingly or not — to speak truth and encouragement into my child's life. Amen.

Scripture to stand on: "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established." — Romans 13:1

Lord, give [child's name] courage this year. Courage to stand up for what's right even when it's unpopular. Courage to be kind to the kid who's left out. Courage to say no when everyone else is saying yes. Courage to live out their faith even in a world that doesn't always understand it. Make them bold in the best possible way. Amen.

Scripture to stand on: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9

Father, I pray for peace over [child's name] this school year. When they feel anxious about tests, about friendships, about fitting in — let Your peace that passes all understanding guard their heart and mind. Remind them that You are with them in every classroom, every hallway, every hard moment. They are never alone. Amen.

Scripture to stand on: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:6-7

If you want one prayer to pray every morning before your child walks out the door, here it is:

"God, go with [child's name] today. Protect them, guide them, and remind them that they are loved — by us and by You. Help them to be kind, to be brave, and to shine Your light wherever they go. Bring them home safely. Amen."

It takes thirty seconds. It covers everything that matters. And it sends your child into their day knowing they've been prayed over.

Your child may not remember every prayer you pray over them. But they will remember that you prayed. They will grow up knowing that their mother brought them before God — consistently, specifically, faithfully.

That is a legacy that will outlast any school year.
